10-19 Architecture

2522 Aiken Ave brings bold forms and new life to an old single-story house.  The literal and symbolic center of this modern home is a 2-story tall atrium/dining room, where access to light, air, and open space take the place of the traditional hearth.  Bright, expansive glazing draw in the outdoors on every level, and a steel/wood louver/guardrail screen animates the street facade.  The back of the house hovers above the rear-sloping lot and wraps around a majestic Ash tree, creating a tree house-like effect for the adjacent spaces.  The tree in turn provides welcome summer shade.  From its interior spaces and multiple decks, the new house provides views of Rancho Park Golf Course, Century City, and the Santa Monica Mountains.
